Finding The Best Catholic Retreats

Catholic retreats encompass both personal retreat experiences or group withdrawals from every day life for usually a short period of time in order to connect with God in prayer, reflection and sometimes fasting. Jesus is the one who set an example by spending forty days apart in the desert where he overcame temptation and defeated Satan. This experience was foundational for the launch of his public ministry. Therefore, the early Christians sought their retreat experience in the desert, mountains and other places away from the hustle and bustle for prayer and reflection. As time went on, monasteries and convents were established providing retreats for seekers after God. In the later part of the 16th century, Catholic retreat centers or houses were established to provide people or groups with recognizable places for this experience.

Catholics have typically formed retreats in several different ways. A scriptural theme or some spiritual writing is often used to form a retreat around. The selection is made with the needs of the participants in mind. Also, retreats have been formed around the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. These have been used at Catholic spiritual retreats to reveal to the participants through prayer and reflection on the life, sufferings, death and resurrection of Christ the need of surrender to God's great plan of salvation in Christ. The daily Scripture readings assigned in the Lectionary of the Roman Missal have been used as a focal point is some retreats also. Some retreats are for the purpose of receiving more of the Holy Spirit and His gifts and this Catholic charismatic retreat will be dealt with at greater length in the last paragraph below.

The three basic kinds of Catholic retreats are: private, preached, and directed. Private Catholic spiritual retreats are designed for individual times alone with no human being leading or directing the retreat. Secondly, there is the preached retreat in which a leader usually speaks each day on a conference topic, leads prayer times, and sometimes does private counseling with the retreatants. Last but not least there are directed retreats where a spiritual director meets with each participant and may give individualized recommendations concerning scripture passages for prayer and reflection. At all of these three types of retreats some measure of silence or a quiet time is kept for prayer and personal study or reflection. Many go on a Catholic spiritual retreat because they have a serious decision or commitment to consider. Some just want to strengthen their spiritual lives through greater obediance to God, cleansing, and spiritual growth.

A very highly recommended retreat center for Catholics and other Christians was established by former Catholic Priest Francis McNutt who left the priesthood out of obedience to God. The Lord led Francis into a global healing ministry and brought him into a divine marriage with Judith. In 1993 Francis received a dispensation from the Catholic Church and his marriage to Judith was celebrated with a ceremony officiated by the Most Reverend John Snyder, Bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine, at Marywood Retreat Center in Jacksonville, Florida. Their ministry and retreat center is called Christian Healing Ministries and is in Jacksonville, Florida. It offers a Journey to Healing Retreat. You can experience physical healing and also deep inner healing for your spirit and soul at this Christian retreat center. In 2007, the International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Service in the Vatican co-sponsored an international conference with Christian Healing Ministries for 450 Catholic leaders from 42 countries. Held in Jacksonville, the purpose of the six-day conference was to bring the teachings of Francis and Judith to the worldwide Catholic church. You can find their web site and join in on the retreats they set up several times a year. You can also learn how to pray for the sick so you can be a greater influence for God in your own orbit of influence.
